Report of the AGM meeting held on Monday, February 2, 2009.
The annual General Meeting is never a very highly attended meeting but this year with the present extremely hot weather conditions, we had even less with just the most faithful 17 of our members attending. The usual reports were given. The Secretary’s report can be read by going to
this link or can be printed also. The committee is again staying as is. Our Patron Ron Fitch who was to be present has had a fall at home and was unable to attend. He will be 99 later this year and is now our oldest member. During our Christmas break, four of our members have past on. They were: Harmen Bakker, formerly painter at Tailem Bend on December 8, 2008 at the age of 89. Also Lionel Maynard, formerly Road Master in Adelaide on December 12 aged 79. Alf Vitkunas, formerly Super Clerk at Keswick on December 15 aged 83. Lastly Margaret Owen, wife of Havelock, deceased on January 28, 2009 aged 91. May they all rest in peace.

Twenty-seven persons turned up for today’s meeting to hear Tony Roger, a volunteer at the history department of the weather bureau, not to talk about the weather but about his book “The Weather Prophet”. This is a fascinating insight into the day-to-day lives of the people of Australia with hundreds of stories about how they coped with Australia’s weather. He had his book on sale at a discounted price and our members bought a number of them. Indeed a very interesting man to listen to.

In his usual relaxed style, the speaker for the day, John Evans of SA Tourism, presented another historical presentation on the big screen. This time all about the track to Brinkworth, once upon a time a very busy corridor but now just a piece of history with the track pulled up. It is so sad to see most of our railway system disappear. The death was recorded of George Spyrou, formerly Station Master Adelaide on April 8 at the young age of 74. In addition, Greg Ivchenko, formerly Station Assistant Mitcham on February 5 aged 84. May they rest in peace.

We had 26 persons attending our meeting today to hear Jason Higham from the Primary Industries and Resources Department of SA talk about the native Fish in the Murray-Darling River systems. It proved to be a fascinating subject, perhaps more than any of our members expected. Far to many native fish species have disappeared or are on the endangered list, while many alien species including Carp are invading our systems. He had an extremely well put together PowerPoint display all in full colour of the many fish species in our rivers.

Report of Day-Tour to Murray Bridge on Friday, June 5, 2009.
Leaving the Festival Theatre at 9.00 am with 28 travellers on board we went via the Southern Freeway to Littlehampton were we had our morning tea break. Then travelling via Nairne we followed the old highway to Murray Bridge arriving at the Roundhouse by 11.00 am. In Railway terms a roundhouse is known as storage for locomotives, however this one has nothing to do with locomotives but more with tollgates. It is a cottage shaped six-sided so the tollgate keeper can observe persons all around. The railways later used it to house the local Super Intendant. Travelled to Dundees Hotel/Restaurant were we enjoyed a very extensive Smorgasbord. Then travelled via the Freeway to the Hahndorf Fruit and Vegetable complex for some shopping before heading home arriving at the Festival Theatre at 4.30 pm.
